What a VIN Tells You

Every car and light truck built since 1981 has a unique 17-character Vehicle Identification Number. Manufacturers encode the vehicle's build details into it, so decoding a VIN is the quickest way to confirm that a car is what the seller says it is: the right model year, trim, engine and drivetrain.

Before you buy, compare the decoded specs with the listing. A mismatch between the advertised trim or engine and what the VIN says is a reason to ask questions.

The 17 Characters Explained

1–3

World manufacturer identifier

Country of origin, manufacturer and vehicle type. A first digit of 1, 4 or 5 means the car was built in the United States.

4–8

Vehicle descriptor

Model, body style, engine, restraint system and other build details, coded differently by each manufacturer.

9

Check digit

A digit calculated from the other 16 characters. If it doesn't add up, the VIN was mistyped or altered.

10

Model year

A letter or number for the model year: for example N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025.

11

Assembly plant

The factory that built the vehicle.

12–17

Serial number

The production sequence number that makes this vehicle unique.

Frequently Asked Questions About VIN Decoding

What is a VIN decoder?

A VIN decoder translates the 17 characters of a Vehicle Identification Number into the details the manufacturer coded into it: model year, make, model, trim, engine, body style, assembly plant and factory safety equipment.

Is this VIN decoder really free?

Yes. Decoding a VIN costs nothing and needs no account. A full vehicle history report, with title brands, odometer readings, salvage and sale records, is a paid report.

Where do I find my VIN?

Look at the bottom corner of the windshield on the driver's side, on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb, or on the title, registration and insurance card.

Why did my VIN not decode completely?

Vehicles built before 1981 used shorter VINs with no common standard, and some manufacturers report fewer details than others. A typo also stops a VIN decoding: VINs never contain the letters I, O or Q.

Does a VIN decoder show accident or title history?

No. Decoding only reads what was coded into the VIN at the factory. Title brands, odometer readings and salvage records come from a vehicle history report.
